Harvard Kennedy School of Government - Littauer Library

Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA

BDG collaborated with the Library Leadership Team, Faculty, Students, and the Administration, to program and define the spaces that were needed. These conversations and goals were translated into a new vision for the Library and how it is interwoven into the daily teaching and learning of the Harvard Kennedy School Community.

The design for the new Littauer Library now brings light and energy into a facility that has served the Kennedy School Campus for nearly 30 years. The Library renovation is part of

a Campus wide renovation and expansion project. The new Library is now larger than the previous; providing several Reading Rooms, a large flexible Classroom, and a variety of individual and group study areas.

The new design of the spaces elevates the natural daylighting, while creating spaces that are welcoming and intimate. Vertical garden elements introduced into the Library add greenery without taking up valuable floor space. A double-sided fireplace creates a natural gathering spot for students in the Lobby and in one of the Study Lounges.
