British Aerospace Engineering Systems - Night Vision Battle Lab

Location Confidential

British Aerospace Engineering (BAE Systems) asked BDG to help them design and engineer a large scale indoor laboratory for training soldiers and developing Night Vision eyewear. The greatest challenge of this unusual project was the requirement to artificially recreate indoors, the “infrared energy” emitted by a starlit sky. This infrared energy is invisible to human eyes, but in the dark, this type of energy illuminates objects so that they can be seen using Night Vision glasses. As a further challenge, we were challenged to recreate the infrared conditions that the sky generates under cloudy, overcast, sunrise, and sunset conditions.

The architectural, mechanical, and lighting design problems and solutions were both challenging and exciting to resolve. The plans and details for this project are highly classified, but the images below represent the type of real-life training stages that this new facility supports.
